Langston Hughes

The African-American poet is considered one of the greatest poets and writers and the leader of the Harlem Renaissance. His style of poetry is referred to as Jazz Poetry, a genre that he innovated. Hughes published eleven plays and countless works of prose including his memoir, The Big Sea. He also edited a series of poetry collections. He won a number of awards and an eponymous literary society was set up to honour him. Although he never came out publicly about his sexuality, most historians say that he experienced “deep romantic attractions with other men.” He was homosexual as he wrote many love poems with their subjects being men and was often found in the company of gay men, sources say.
