James Baldwin’s debut novel follows the story of a teenager, John Grimes, through the “complicated worlds of religion, sexual awakening and family in 1930s Harlem, New York.” The book has been used in schools since its publication in 1953, however, in 1994, it was challenged in a Hudson Falls, NY school because of its depictions of violence, rape, masturbation, and abuse of women.
