2. Nama
The Namas speak Nama, Afrikaans and English and they are believed to be between 100,000 and 140.000 years old. There are over 130,000 Namas and they are in Namibia and Botswana.
The Khoikhoi’s last true descendants are the Nama who are closely related to the San. The San and Khoikhoi are known as the Khoisan. Together they are known as the oldest descendants of humans and they share a DNA with some of the oldest humans.
There are very few pure Namas because of intermarriages and an outbreak of smallpox in the 18th century. They turned cattle farmers after the San people acquired cattle stock over 2,300 years ago.
To distinguish themselves from the main Khoisan group, they started calling themselves Khoikhoi and the Nama are their remaining descendants.
