After previously leading the country as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985, Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023.
He was known for his stance on anti-corruption and efforts to stabilize the economy, which unfortunately appears far from great today under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Born in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari was raised by his mother after his father died when he was only four years old.
The former Nigerian president was his nation’s military head of state from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985 after a military coup.
His death is currently seeing an outpouring of tributes from political figures in Nigeria and many other heads of state on the continent and around the world.
