Issa Rae is venturing into the restaurant industry. The actor and writer has opened Somerville, a progressive American dining experience that embodies the vibrant and dynamic spirit of the South Central Los Angeles community it highlights.
The 39-year-old businesswoman shared the news of Somerville’s grand opening on Instagram, outlining her vision for the restaurant.
She wrote, “Always wanted a neighborhood lounge to complement the special community that is View Park-Windsor Hills. The genius GVO Gentlemen said, how about a restaurant? @somerville.slauson — an ode to the classic, artistic past of Black South Central L.A? And sure, the ambience will be fantastic, but the food and cocktails will keep you coming back.”
The grand opening weekend attracted celebrities and notable figures, including Tracee Ellis Ross, who commented, “Ohhhhh I will be back. Boss lady creating environments and stuff. Truffle fries…” on Rae’s Instagram post.
Yvonne Orji, who also attended, remarked, “You all are creating something very special for future generations.”
Somerville is designed to be more than just a restaurant—it serves as a cultural hub infused with Rae’s authentic style, alongside her business partners Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan, as noted by Essence.
The restaurant operates from Wednesday to Sunday, between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., featuring a diverse menu that includes the Somerville burger, pan-seared Ora King salmon, and Mary’s organic roasted chicken.
Rae is confidently showcasing her business prowess. She is the founder of Hoorae Media, which focuses on media and entertainment, and Ensemble, a creator marketing firm.
Moreover, she owns Sienna Naturals, a vegan haircare brand, and ColorCreative, a management firm dedicated to uplifting women and minority writers. Additionally, Rae co-owns Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen, a community-centered café with several locations across Los Angeles.
