Authorities in New York said a 38-year-old registered sex offender brutally assaulted his 65-year-old neighbor before throwing him out of a third-story window to his death. According to News10 NBC, the suspect, identified as Daniel Young, allegedly assaulted Angel Lopez on the third floor of an apartment building where they were staying.

Police said the assault on Lopez left him in a semi-conscious condition, adding that Young subsequently threw him out through a window of the apartment. The victim then landed on a fire escape on the second floor before fatally falling on the pavement, police said.

Authorities took Young into custody on the same day and admitted him to the Rochester General Hospital under the Mental Hygiene Law. He was later charged with murder in the second degree after he was discharged.

Young has pleaded not guilty while claiming self-defense. He asked to represent himself but a judge didn’t allow that. Young is being held in the Monroe County Jail without bail as police seek to find relatives of the victim, Blaze Media reported Monday.

Young is a registered Level 2 sex offender who was once jailed after being convicted of attempted abuse in 2006, the outlet added.
