Pick a Bale of Cotton

“Jump down, turn around, pick a bowl of cherries,” are the lyrics we usually sing today but the original contained: “Jump down, turn around, pick a bale of cotton. Gotta jump down, turn around, Oh, Lordie, pick a bale a day.”

The song talks about plantation life as a slave and is seen as making fun of such conditions.
