Like has been the convention for the former president, Barack Obama always has a playlist he cools off with in summer. This year was no different as he shared his summer list, giving an insight into the wave of mood he wants to be in while enjoying some 40-plus songs. The former president on Thursday tweeted “Like I do every year, here are some songs I’ve been listening to this summer”.
His collection ranges from the old classics to the new school including Tina and Ike Turner’s 1996 hit “River Deep Mountain High” to indie rock group Boygenius’s “Not Strong Enough” which was released this year. Obama’s playlist also showed throwbacks from the 90s hip-hop anthem “California Love” by 2Pac featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman along with hits like Bangles’ 80s track “Walk Like an Egyptian”.
The former president also did not want to miss out on the current vibes, as he listed his love for Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj’s 2023 single “Princess Diana” and “Vampiros” by Rauw Alejandro and Rosalia which was released in 2023. However, there were some tunes Obama decided to pull out of his summer 2021 archives, which included the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, SZA, Michael Kiwanuka, and Bob Dylan, as reported by CNN.
Obama also chipped in the soothing country song from Luke Comb’s cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1998 class “Fast Car” which made it to No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart recently, making Chapman the first black woman to make it to the top charts in the 33-year history of the charts.
The Beths’ “Watching the Credits, Joria Smith’s “Try Me”, Ashley McBryde’s “The Devil I Know” and Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe” also made it to Obama’s summer list.
