Queen Latifah is on a mission to give back to society and she is starting in Newark, New Jersey, where she grew up to become the Queen of the entertainment industry.

According to The Roots, Queen Latifah is pumping $14 million into suitable and quality housing units for residents of Brick City through her company BlueSugar Corporation and a partnership with GonSosa Development.

The affordable housing units will range from 20 three-family townhomes and a three-story mixed-used building with an additional 16 units. The plans also include a fitness centre and 1,900 square feet of commercial space that will be rented to nonprofits. The 60 units in the townhouses will be market rate; the 16 units in the building will be affordable.

Expected to be completed in December 2021, the affordable housing units will be priced according to a person’s income while the market rate units will be priced at $1,800 a month and will be available by December 2021.

The project is expected to kick off in the summer and has been a life-long dream of the singer, rapper, actress and producer who grew up in Newark where she was discovered in 1989.

It looks like fans and people of Newark will be singing All Hail the Queen reminding the 49-year-old of her debut album that launched her successful career in the entertainment industry.
