Shanelle Scales-Preston was just elected as Contra Costa County’s next District 5 supervisor, making her the first African-American woman elected to the county’s Board of Supervisors.
District 5 includes Alhambra Valley, North Antioch, Bay Point, Briones, Clyde, North Concord, Crockett, Hercules, Martinez, Pacheco, Pittsburg, Port Costa, Reliez Valley, Rodeo, and Vine Hill.
Scales-Preston, a former member of the Pittsburg City Council, was elected in November to succeed Federal Glover, who served on the board for 24 years before retiring, according to CBS News.
Scales-Preston was elected mayor in 2023 after being elected to the Pittsburg City Council in 2018. She also serves as the chair of the board for local electricity supplier Marin Clean Energy (MCE).
Scales-Preston said in a statement, “This moment is about building bridges — bridges to equity, community safety, economic opportunity, and a brighter future for al. Together, we will strive to ensure that every voice is heard, every neighborhood thrives, and every family has the opportunity to succeed.”
Scales-Preston obtained a degree from California State University East Bay. She and her husband live in Pittsburgh with their two sons, according to her website.
