Last week Tuesday football legends held a charity match to raise money for the many people starving in Northern Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.

The match was organized in response to Oxfam’s charity appeal for those affected by the food crisis in East Africa. “Proceeds from the match, along with donations made online and via SMS, are being donated to Oxfam’s East Africa food crisis appeal and will be spent on providing clean water, sanitation, food and cash support in parts of Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia,” said Alun McDonald, Oxfam’s media and communications officer in East and Central Africa.

“The final income is still being counted but so far at least $500,000 has been raised,” McDonald added. The match, between Manchester United Legends and Scottish soccer giants Celtic United Legends, was played at the latter’s Parkhead Stadium in Glasgow.

The outcome of the game was 5-2 in favor of the hosts, but charity was the real winner.
