Thebe Magugu takes us back to his hometown in SA for his autumn/winter 2020 collection

South Africa’s Thebe Magugu made headlines when he became the first African to win the prestigious LVMH Prize for young fashion designers in 2019.

A year after, he has done it again. This time, he paid homage to his homeland of Kimberley in South Africa with an amazing photo exhibition entitled, Ipopeng Ext.

“The name [Ipopeng Ext] translates into ‘beautify yourself’ – a fitting name for the people and places who serve as my earliest and most poignant references,” the South African designer explained on Instagram.

Magugu’s autumn/winter 2020 collection contains reminders of his childhood, including a photoprint of his aunt’s corrugated iron roof and a picture of his uncle on a motorcycle wearing a collared shirt.

The elegant portraits were captured by South African photographer Kristin-Lee Moolman and Sierra Leone–born stylist Ib Kamara.
