The island of Antigua and Barbuda can be described as one of God’s greatest gifts to mankind.

The sovereign state, located in the West Indies, lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Consisting of two major islands – Antigua and Barbuda – it is surrounded by other smaller islands, making your experience on the island less of a hustle.

It has a population of 95, 900. It is the center of Great Bird, Green, Guiana, Long, Maiden and York Islands, and further south, the island of Redonda.

Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, it was later colonized by the British in 1632. Although a sovereign state, Antigua and Barbuda remains a member of the Commonwealth and Elizabeth II is the country’s queen and head of state.

The island remains an attractive tourist destination, despite suffering a devastating Hurricane Irma, which damaged 95% of its buildings.

In commemoration of its independence, Face2Face Africa brings you some of the coolest places to spend your holidays.
