Color Him Father helped her become the first Black woman to appear on the Grand Ole Opry

After the release of her single, Martell became the first African-American woman to be on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, a country music show in Nashville, Tenn., which began weekly radio broadcasts in December 1925. She received a standing ovation for her performance in August 1969. Two years prior to her performance, Charlie Pride had become the first Black man to appear on the Grand Ole Opry stage. Martell also made television appearances on The Bill Anderson Show and Hee Haw in 1970.
