1984 Cyclone Kamisy
About 68 people died and nearly 100,000 displaced when the worst tropical cyclone to hit Madagascar in nearly a century made landfall in the northern part of the country near Diego Suarez in April 1984. Cyclone Kamisy, which lasted for about two days, created winds of 160 mph and dropped nearly 10 inches of rain in less than a day. It destroyed cities and towns across the north and an estimated $250 million was spent on damages.
