Droughts in eastern and southern Africa

Between July 2011 and mid-2012, a severe and massive drought hit the entire East Africa region, particularly in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea and Djibouti. The situation caused a major food crisis in the region, with parts of southern Somalia being declared official famine zones by the UN. Officials say between 50,000 and 100,000 people, more than half being children under five, died due to the situation.
