A transgender cheerleader was booted out of a cheerleading camp in Texas after she allegedly choked a teammate she accused of telling her that she was a “man with a penis.” According to Fox News, Averie Chanel Medlock also received a criminal citation after officers were called to the scene.

Medlock took to Facebook to share her version of the story. She also announced she was retiring as a cheerleader. “Well guys I’m officially retired as a cheerleader as of last night at 5:30 AM. A girl on the team was being very disrespectful and told me I am a MAN with a PENIS and that [guys] should not be on the team,” she wrote.

“I stood up for myself and she called her mom and dad because she was scared because I [stood] up for myself. Her father said ‘she still has testosterone and a penis and I will kill anyone who comes after my daughter.’”

The confrontation reportedly happened at Ranger College. Other team members who also addressed the incident on Facebook said police officers were called to the camp after they received a report about a dispute. Medlock claimed she got into the dispute with the teammate after she made transphobic and racist comments, Fox News reported.

The girl Medlock is accused of choking called her father in the wake of the dispute. The man also went to the camp after he received the call. He said he wants the police to release footage of the incident.

“I ask you what you would have done when receiving a phone call at 1 o’clock in the morning from your daughter stating they had locked themselves in the room with other girls,” he reportedly shared on Facebook. “At no time did I ever say anything about your race or your gender.”

And though Medlock suggested the alleged physical altercation was a joke, officers who responded to the scene still gave her a criminal citation and moved her out of the campus.

This recent incident comes in the wake of the growing conversation around transgender people competing in female sports.
