Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris visited Ghana last year. Her visit to the West African country marked a significant moment in U.S.-Africa relations, reflecting a nuanced approach to diplomacy that could shape her administration’s Africa policy if elected the next president of the United States.

Together with the Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, they were welcomed to Ghana by the U.S. Embassy in the country from March 26-29, 2023. She had several engagements with leaders in the country.

The 59-year-old American politician delivered a speech at the Black Star Square in Accra. Following this, she made a poignant visit to the historic Cape Coast Castle. Her speech offered a vision that intertwines respect for historical ties, a commitment to human rights, and a focus on economic development.

Watch the full speech below:

A Renewed Partnership

The U.S. Vice President emphasized a new era of partnership between the United States and Africa, highlighting the shared history and values that bind the two regions. Her acknowledgement of both the “painful and prideful” aspects of this history is crucial. It suggests a U.S. approach that respects Africa not merely as a geopolitical interest but as a partner with its own rich history and potential. This perspective aligns with the broader Biden administration’s foreign policy ethos of multilateralism and respect for sovereignty.

The announcement of $139 million in U.S. assistance to West Africa, primarily aimed at conflict prevention in the Sahel region, underscores a practical commitment to stability and development. This funding is not just a diplomatic gesture but a strategic investment in a region that has faced increasing threats from extremist groups. By focusing on security and governance, the U.S. aims to support African nations in creating a stable environment conducive to growth and prosperity.

Empowerment and Human Rights

One of the most notable aspects of Harris’ speech was her emphasis on women’s empowerment and human rights. In a continent where gender inequality and human rights abuses remain significant challenges, Harris’ message resonated strongly. Her call for gender equity and support for marginalized communities, including the LGBTQ+ population, highlights a U.S. policy stance that prioritizes human rights as foundational to international relations.

This stance is particularly significant given the context of many African nations, including Ghana, where LGBTQ+ rights are restricted. By addressing these issues directly, Harris not only reinforced her personal commitment to equality but also signaled a broader U.S. foreign policy that advocates for universal human rights. This approach may encourage African nations to re-evaluate their own policies and practices concerning marginalized groups.

Economic Development and Innovation

Harris’ focus on the digital economy and innovation reflects a forward-looking vision for Africa’s economic development. The continent, with its youthful population and rapidly growing tech sector, is poised for a digital transformation. By supporting initiatives that enhance digital infrastructure and entrepreneurship, the U.S. can invest in Africa’s future as a key player in the global economy.

This emphasis on economic development is not just about charity or aid; it’s about recognizing Africa’s potential as a driver of innovation and growth. By fostering a robust digital economy, African nations can leapfrog traditional developmental stages and directly integrate into the global market.

Acknowledging and Learning from History

Kamala Harris visited the Cape Coast Castle, a site of profound historical significance, and highlighted the importance of acknowledging the past. The castle, once a hub in the transatlantic slave trade, serves as a stark reminder of the brutal history shared between Africa and the Americas. The revered American politician spoke of the “horror of what happened here” and emphasized the need for historical education to ensure such atrocities are neither forgotten nor repeated.

This acknowledgement of history is vital for several reasons. First, it recognizes the enduring impact of the transatlantic slave trade on African and African diaspora communities. Second, it provides a foundation for a more honest and respectful partnership between the U.S. and African nations.

What Does the Future Hold for Kamala Harris?

A few days ago, she was endorsed by President Joe Biden after he stepped down from his re-election campaign.

Kamala reacted to the good news in a statement on Sunday, July 21, 2024. She opened up about her intentions following her nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate for the upcoming elections. The Vice President said she intends to “earn and win” the Democratic presidential nomination following the announcement made by Joe Biden.

Meanwhile, Biden’s announcement and his endorsement of Harris has received mixed reactions online.

African leaders are yet to make any public statement about Kamala Harris’ endorsement at the time this piece was being put together.

Do you think Kamala Harris will be the right choice for the Democratic Party as the 2024 U.S. elections draw nearly?
