Algeria
Algeria remains Africa’s biggest military spender at $9.68 billion. However, according to the report, this is a 5.2% reduction from 2016 expenditure. The reason for the reduction is the decrease in oil and gas revenue over the years.
According to Middle East Monitor, the defence budget covers 25% of the country’s budget and will be used in the maintenance of the army and the purchase of armament and equipment.
Algeria had an external debt of $4.02 billion in 2017.
