Quite a number of African countries are experiencing political and social upheaval. Almost all of these countries have a military on which the government spends quite a hefty amount.
For many, the question of having an expensive military is a futile move especially since there is no investment in the most basic resources including food and healthcare. Others feel that it could be more beneficial to transform the military itself instead of buying more weapons.
A new report, Trends in world military expenditure 2017, by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute highlighted that although military spending in Africa reduced in 2017, there are a few countries that increased their expenditure.
