Idris Elba is set to receive the BAFTA Special Award in the upcoming BAFTA TV Awards slated for July 31 behind closed doors due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, BAFTA, is the most prestigious film and television awards in Britain and it is only befitting that the works and contributions of Elba are recognized.

For his outstanding presence, his films, and offscreen as a director, writer and producer, Elba said it was a privilege to be honored with the organization’s special award.

“It’s a great privilege to be honored with the BAFTA Special Award,” Elba said in a statement cited by The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s been a mission of mine to provide opportunity and access to emerging talent from diverse backgrounds in this industry, which is the same opportunity I received many years ago from open-minded and diversity conscious casting.”

He continued his statement by thanking BAFTA for recognizing him and others “who are dedicated to the same cause” of raising awareness about diversity in entertainment.

The Luther star is an ardent advocate for diversity in the industry and in 2016, he challenged the British parliament on the motion of diversity after which his production company, Green Door Pictures, which was founded in 2013, took on the mantle to “provide on-the-job training and help undiscovered talent.”

Some of his notable roles on the big screens include Beasts of No Nation, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and Molly’s Game.

Amanda Berry, BAFTA chief executive, was full of praises for Elba. She said, “[Elba] is also a driving force for championing diversity, ensuring talented people from all backgrounds achieve their potential. We’re delighted to recognize Idris, and his outstanding work, at this year’s ceremony.”
