Amon Simutowe was introduced to the game of chess by his brother at the tender age of 10. Though his first love was football, chess soon outpaced this passion when he learned more about the intriguing board game. Since then, he has gained a reputation as a driving force in the game within the sub-region. It wasn’t surprising that he won his first chess tournament by the age of 12 and also won Zambia’s Under 21 National Championship a year later. He then placed fifth in the African Junior Chess Championship that same year.
His outstanding performance in the game earned him the nickname, the Zambezi Shark, after winning the African Junior Chess Championship in 1999 and 2000, in which he bagged impressive scores of 12/13 and 11/11 respectively.
