A 33-year-old mother has been sentenced to 5 years in prison after her then-10-year-old daughter shot and killed another woman during an altercation in May 2022. According to ClickOrlando, Lakrisha Isaac was handed the sentence after she reached a plea agreement.
Isaac initially faced up to 20 years in prison, but she ultimately changed her plea from not guilty to no contest on manslaughter charges and culpable negligence by leaving a loaded firearm within reach of a minor.
Isaac also received a 128-day credit on her sentence for time served. The convicted woman is also required to serve three years of probation after she completes her sentence.
“To the family, I am so sorry for your loss. Sometimes we find justice in other ways. If this is something you are struggling with, I can tell you that each and every one of us understands your struggle,” Judge Kevin B. Weiss said.
Isaac’s daughter is said to have fatally shot Lashun Rodgers, 41, during a cookout the victim was having at the Jernigan Gardens Apartments in Florida. A witness said that prior to the shooting, Isaac gave her daughter her bag before she got into a physical altercation with Rodgers.
Isaac’s bag contained a gun, and her daughter managed to gain access to it before opening fire on Rodgers. The victim was shot twice and later succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.
Authorities arrested Isaac and her daughter in the wake of the fatal incident. Isaac was, however, released on bond. But the Orange-Osceola State Attorney’s Office in a statement at the time said that no charging decision had been made in the case of her daughter, ClickOrlando reported.
