Responding to the severe and devastating flood that has claimed 13 lives and has misplaced thousands of people, president Macky Sall of Senegal has called for the abolishment of the country’s Senate.
He stated that the funds of more than $15 million that has been reserved for the Senate will now go towards prevention.
"Closing the Senate comes as a result of the urgent and crucial need to find substancial funds to deal with the issues generated by the flooding.” said El Hadj Kasse, the president’s spokesman.
This move by the president comes after citizens took to the streets to protest against the government for failing to act faster and providing assistance to the victims.
Although president Sall acknowledges the importance of the Senate, he commented saying, “the relief of the suffering of the people is more important than the Senate, for us to stop the floods that cyclically affect our country,” reported Efe.
The majority of the citizens of Senegal are happy with the President’s decision as they do not think that the Senate is doing much to improve general state affairs anyway.
