At the young age of seventeen, Kamora Freeland has reached a turning point in her dream of becoming a pilot – she has obtained her private pilot’s license.
The Staten Island teen told ABC7, “I have a passion for it [flying] and I love it.”
Although Freeland is just a senior at Kingsborough Early College High School, she recently completed a check ride to obtain her private pilot’s license.
She had earlier done her solo and cross-country flights, and the previous summer, she had even brought her mother to Martha’s Vineyard.
The proud mother recalled the experience, saying, “She flew me, and I enjoyed it, and she really did it, and I couldn’t believe that she was the pilot of the of the plane that I was sitting in the back of.”
Her family’s support was evident on test day, with close relatives from far away joining her.
Freeland flew for nearly an hour with a designated pilot examiner to obtain the license, and when she landed, she was told she had passed.
“She’s focused and she’s still just a kid,” her flight instructor, who began instructing and flying with Freeland at the age of 15, said of her.
Her mother expressed her delight, saying, “I didn’t see this a year and a half ago, so to be here and see it with my own two eyes, I’m grateful.”
The teenage pacesetter received a ton of congratulations. Her father gave her a hug, as did a Tuskegee airman.
“It’s definitely amazing. I’m a part of the change that’s definitely needed and I want other little Black girls to do the same,” Freeland remarked.
She revealed that she plans to enroll at Spellman College in the fall and to acquire her commercial pilot’s license.
