Clinton Mayers, 19, was taken into custody following the ambush of an armored vehicle and the shooting of its driver outside of an Atlanta Kroger, according to a federal affidavit. He attempted to steal the driver’s gun after firing at him and took over $100,000, officials said.
The FBI is now the lead agency in this case and the affidavit, which was submitted in federal court, offers fresh information about the incident.
The incident began shortly after 9 a.m. on September 15 at the Kroger located at 2685 Metropolitan Parkway, as per an Atlanta Police statement.
11 Alive reports that the affidavit states that the driver of a Loomis armored van, who was the victim of the incident, was in stable condition after he was shot.
Mayers was allegedly wearing all black, including black gloves, a black beanie, and a blue medical mask, when the driver of the armored van—who was only recognized by his initials, C.S.—came out of the Kroger on Metropolitan Parkway carrying a money bag.
“Mayers yelled something at in C.S.’s direction. C.S. was carrying the money in one bag, by hand. Mayers then fired one round at C.S., who was standing by the passenger door of the armored van, striking him in the head,” the affidavit stated, adding that the victim sustained a wound in the shooting.
According to the affidavit, Mayers took over $88,000 in cash and $17,000 in checks. Atlanta Police previously predicted that approximately $50,000 was stolen in the incident.
“After about three seconds, Mayers returned to where C .S. was laying and attempted to take C.S.’s firearm from his belt but was unsuccessful,” according to the statement. “Mayers then fled the location.”
The affidavit contains a surveillance image from the incident.
Police said the teenager fled the scene of the incident and crashed in Forest Park before being brought into jail.
The affidavit states that when Mayers was arrested in Forest Park, authorities “could see money ‘all over the ground’ around the Civic.”
An FBI representative in Atlanta informed Fox 5 Atlanta that Mayers will face federal charges.
Kroger said in a statement, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim, as well as the victim’s family and friends. The safety and security of our customers and associates remain our top priority. We are deeply grateful to local authorities for their swift response, and will continue to refer all questions to them as they lead this investigation.”
