A 75-year-old daycare worker was taken into custody for allegedly mistreating a baby at a Christian preschool over the summer. Gladys Rampersant, a resident of North Charleston, has been charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.
After opening on July 26 of this year, Sweetgrass Christian Academy, where she worked, has been shut down for good.
According to WCSC, Rampersant was engaging with a baby under the age of one, yanking them up by the arms and shaking the newborn forcefully before “slamming” the child into a cot.
Rampersant allegedly returned to the infant, yanked them from a cot, and hit them over the head.
According to police, Rampersant was detained for this “disturbing” incident and booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
According to jail records, she was released roughly five hours after being booked and posting a $15,000 bond.
Police said their investigation into this situation is still underway.
This case echoes a similar incident in Bainbridge, Georgia, where Yvette Thurston, 54, a daycare worker, was arrested for child abuse after a toddler under her care sustained serious injuries, including a black eye and swollen face.
Thurston is facing three counts of first-degree child abuse and one of first-degree aggravated battery, per WDRW.
Thurston was taken into custody after a report of alleged abuse at Little Blessings Child Care close to the Florida border.
