Christianization of marriage

It is safe to say most African marriages have not been contracted unless a Christian leader says so. Christianity, the faith of 16th century Western Europe, was a compulsory part of colonization.

Close to one in two Africans now say they are Christians.

It then follows that if marriage, a supposedly lifelong commitment, is to endure, believers prefer to believe that the Christian God has blessed the affair.
