Chicago Riots of 1919

From July 27 to August 3, 1919, thousands of black and white Chicago residents fought each other in the streets, resulting in 38 deaths (23 African Americans and 15 whites) and over 500 injuries (two-thirds of them African American).

The riots were concentrated on the periphery of African-American neighbourhoods on Chicago’s South Side, as the city’s residential “colour line” was both defended and created through inter-racial violence.
