As the saying goes, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” These traditional leaders set the pace for the likes of Nelson Mandela, Kwame Nkrumah, Amílcar Cabral, Patrice Lumumba and the other anti-colonial leaders to follow.

These brave and fearless chiefs/kings stood their grounds and vehemently resisted attempts by ‘colonizers’ to superimpose their will on their people. When push came to shove, they even took up arms against them.

For the first instalment of this series, Face2Face Africa spotlights these five highly revered traditional leaders who stood their grounds against colonialists.
