Souleymane Cissé – Mali
Souleymane Cissé is a Malian award-winning filmmaker who has left a mark in the Malian movie scene. Souleymane’s first movie Den muso (The Girl) was a prolific full-length movie that summed up rape culture in Mali. The movie shot him to fame in parts of Africa and the world despite being in the Bambara Language. The movie was banned by the government and Souleymane was arrested and sent to jail. His other movies, Yeelen ( Brightness) and Finyé (Wind) went on to receive several awards for the blend of African mythology and magic.
