The African movie industry has developed in so many ways and today it’s enjoying world recognition. Earlier this year, Nigerian actress – now director, Genevieve Nnaji’s film Lionheart made waves when Netflix announced that it had acquired world rights to the movie.

Many African movies considered as classics were written and produced by westerners who found an opportunity and space in the African scene and market.

Despite this, there are several other movies by Africans who pioneered the African film industry. By 1850, Africa started to groom filmmakers who would gain global attention with their outstanding films and stories. Here are 5 of the most prolific African filmmakers who pioneered the African film industry.
