Newton was shot twice in the face in West Oakland, California by Tyrone Robinson, a member of neighbouring Black Guerrilla Family, claiming self-defence to the police on his arrest. When no evidence was found to support his claim, Robinson was convicted of first-degree murder in 1991 and sentenced to a prison term of 32 years to life.
