Paul Robeson

In the late 1920s, Paul Robeson, acclaimed social activist and performer, relocated with his family to Europe to further his career in acting. The decision came when he had enough of the racism and treatment that was not allowing his craft and personality to develop. In the USA, it was extremely hard for black entertainers to enjoy centre stage attention and celebrity lifestyle. As an actor who had won the hearts of many in the USA for featuring in play such as Othello, Paul was denied several roles due to the color of his skin. In Europe, he became an international star and used the platform to speak against the treatment of the Black race and how it affected their progress.
