Naming based on religious faith
Some tribes across Africa use child naming as a means to express their religious faith. They do this by giving names of attributes of their deity of worship. In Nigeria, this is common among the Igbo and Yoruba. Any name that starts or ends with “Chi” or “Chukwu” or Oluwa has some reference to God. The name “Oluwatoyin” translates to “Glory be to God”, and “Makafui” a native name among the Ewe of Ghana and Togo means “I will praise God”. A name Hailemariam from Ethiopia means the power of God.
