An Evansville family is heartbroken after their seven-year-old, Precious Lewis, tragically passed away last week. She collapsed at the Potter’s Wheel after-school care program and staff at the program tried to save her and called 911, but Precious didn’t make it.
Her mother, Angel Lewis, shared her grief with WFIE, saying, “She never came back home.”
The family seeks answers regarding the incident. Though the coroner told them that Precious had an enlarged heart, they await the comprehensive autopsy report, expected in a few weeks, for clarity.
The community began actively fundraising for Precious’s burial, aiming to provide a respectful farewell and ease the financial burden on the family through contributions from friends, family, and the wider community.
“We haven’t had a chance to honor her yet. Because I don’t know how to right now,” Barbara Franklin, Precious’s aunt, said. “I’m trying to scuffle, and get money together, to try to bury her in the morning. And it’s hard,” she said a day before the young girl’s burial last Saturday.
Friends and family remember Precious as a special girl.
“She was very smart,” Angel said. “She was outgoing, she loved to skate, she loved to draw, her favorite colors were pink and purple. She loved to dance, she was always making those Tik Toks.”
“Precious is as precious as her name,” Franklin said. “And I’m gonna miss her. And I just don’t know what I’m gonna do without the days I pass by there and she would run out to my car. And it hurts.”
She was a student at Glenwood Leadership Academy and had previously attended CAPE HeadStart, according to her obituary.
It stated, “Precious was a brilliant, outspoken young lady and always let you know exactly what she meant. ‘Nuk Nuk’ made friends easily. She loved to dance, draw, and make TikTok videos. Most of all. Precious loved her family dearly, and they will miss her bright and loving spirit.”
Potter’s Wheel released a statement to WFIE expressing their heartbreak over the sudden loss of Precious.
“We are heartbroken about the sudden loss of Precious. She was a bright, beautiful girl, full of life and potential. She will be deeply missed by the staff at Potter’s Wheel, who worked with her and her family. We have set up a dedicated giving site to collect funds to assist with funeral costs. 100% of contributions will benefit the family at this difficult time.”
Meanwhile, a fundraiser was established to raise donations toward her funeral arrangements.
Her funeral service was held on October 4.
