An 8-year-old girl in Minnesota bravely intervened in a robbery attempt at her father’s liquor store by repeatedly hitting the suspect with a baseball bat, according to surveillance footage. The incident occurred at Big Discount Liquors in Maplewood around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The suspect, identified as Conchobhar Morrell, 37, was wearing an Amazon uniform and brandished what looked like a handgun.
“He put the gun on the table, he asked me to give him all the money and everything in the register, I told him, ‘Yes — I’ll give you everything,’” the girl’s dad, only identified as Leo, told CBS News.
The suspect then attempted to storm behind the counter where the young girl was standing as the store clerk tried to gather cash during the robbery at the Minnesota liquor store.
Surveillance footage shows the girl’s father quickly intervening by punching the suspect and wrestling him to the floor. The brave 8-year-old then joined, helping her father fend off the attacker.
The little girl was seen arming herself with a baseball bat and repeatedly striking the robbery suspect while her father struggled to pin him down.
The girl’s father, surprised by her involvement, revealed he wasn’t aware of her actions until reviewing the surveillance footage later.
“I’m so proud of her, she’s so strong,” the clerk said.
“That day, I just wanted to cry. When I saw the video, I didn’t expect she’d do that. I expect a little girl crying, screaming.”
The suspect, Morrell, fled the scene shortly after the struggle but was quickly apprehended nearby, police said. He has since been charged with first-degree attempted aggravated robbery. Police later confirmed that the firearm the suspect initially brandished was a BB gun.
An Amazon spokesperson clarified that Morrell was employed as a delivery associate for a third-party service.
The spokesperson stated that Morrell would be “immediately offboarded” following his arrest.
The suspect remains in custody and is scheduled for his initial court hearing on Friday.
