Award-winning comedian and actor, Chris Rock, turns 55 today. With a career spanning over two decades, Rock is undoubtedly one of the funniest and most popular comedians of his generation.
A very talented all-rounder with vast experience in the entertainment industry, Rock, besides stand-up and acting, is also a producer, writer and director.
Rock was born in Andrews, South Carolina, in 1965. He, however, grew up in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, after his parents moved to the neighborhood when he was still a kid.
He was discovered at the age of 18 by fellow legendary comedian, Eddie Murphy, while he was doing stand-up at the Comedy Strip in New York.
Rock steadily rose up the ranks in the 1990s, gaining well-deserved popularity for his comedy special on HBO, Bring in the Pain. He won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special, and Outstanding Writing for a Variety or Music Program for the special in 1997.
Rock was also a cast member of Saturday Night Live in the 1990s and has featured in popular and box office movies including Madagascar, Grown Ups 1 & 2, Head of State, Down to Earth, Top Yard, just to mention a few. From 2005 to 2009, he wrote and narrated the popular sitcom series based on his childhood, Everybody Hates Chris.
Also a three-time Grammy award winner, Biography.com said: “Rock is most noted for his raw humor and has no qualms about making fun of all sexes and races. His uninhibited nature has garnered him respect as well as controversy from both white and minority communities.”
