Carrie Best
Born in New Glasgow, N.S., in 1903, she founded The Clarion in 1946, a newspaper made to reach the black citizens of New Glasgow. Using it to publicize cases of inequality, The Clarion was also the first black-owned and published newspaper in Nova Scotia. The writer, journalist and activist also hosted The Quiet Corner radio program before being made an Officer of Canada in 1979. She passed away in 2001.
