British-Ugandan actor Daniel Kaluuya shot into superstardom after his 2017 breakout film, Get Out. The 35-year-old’s stellar performance in the psychological horror film has yet landed him another recognition as a statue will be installed in his honor in London.
Per Variety, Kaluuya received the nod after 5,000 British film fans partook in a poll and picked him as the actor whose statue most people would be open to seeing at the “Scenes in the Square” trail in Leicester Square. The poll saw Kaluuya receive one-fifth of the vote.
The statue will be designed to mimic Get Out’s iconic “Sunken Place” scene where Chris Washington – the character portrayed by Kaluuya – is hypnotized and sent into a suppressed metaphysical abyss, per Variety.
The trail is already home to notable statues depicting Harry Potter, Batman, Wonder Woman, Mary Poppins, Gene Kelly, and the Iron Throne in Game of Thrones. The statue in honor of Kaluuya is intended to cast a spotlight on the success of contemporary cinema and homegrown talent, per reports.

The Heart of London Business Alliance manages “Scenes in London.” “We are excited to welcome Daniel Kaluuya and Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’ to our Scenes in the Square line-up as a celebration of a modern cinematic success and homegrown British talent,” Mark Williams, the deputy chief executive for Heart of London Business Alliance, said.
“It points to a bright future for our trail, with Kaluuya as a chosen symbol of the future of entertainment, and it is a pleasure to be able to spotlight such a pioneering film.”
Kaluuya’s standout performance in Get Out paved the way for him to land roles in other popular movies including Black Panther, Judas and the Black Messiah, and Nope. Get Out also saw Kaluuya earning a 2018 Oscar nomination for Best Actor while the movie’s director, Jordan Peele, also won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The movie was additionally nominated in two other categories at the 2018 Academy Awards.
The movie raked in $250 million from the box office – though the budget for shooting was less than $5 million. The organizers said Kaluuya’s statue will be unveiled in October to coincide with Halloween and Black History Month.
