ASA at SUNY ALBANY Presents “Cirque De L’Afrique”
The African Student Association at SUNY Albany held its yearly African Pageant on Thursday March 31st to commemorate the end of “Africa Week 2011” which consisted of discussions and a movie showing. “Cirque De L’Afrique: Royal Rendezvous” had six contestants representing the African nations of Nigeria, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Guinea ,Ghana and Tunisia and all vying for the title of ASA King and Queen .Once getting the title, they serve as ASA ambassadors by representing ASA at events on campus and coordinating community service initiatives on behalf of the group.
The actual show included performances by a Ghanaian Albany based African dance group, as well as story time by Ekow King and poetry by ASA member Francesca. The contestants provided entertainment through their various talents from singing, dancing and spoken word. The aim of the event was to educate the Albany community about African culture and history as the contestants gave brief introductions of their countries and wore traditional attire from their respective countries.
