Caves of Hercules
Greek hero Hercucles is said to have rested in the caves. The cave which was initially thought to be bottomless is about 8,000 years old and the most popular of its two entrances is known as the “Map of Africa”.
This man-made entrance by the Phoenicians is shaped like the African continent and faces the sea. At the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, northwesternmost point of mainland Africa, the Cap Spartel lighthouse is near the Caves of Hercules and it is a 15-minute ride from Tangier.
