California African-American Freedom Trail
This trail is a guide to the African American attractions in San Francisco, including 55 locations categorised into three main points: Cool Dining, Cool Culture and Important Event Sites.
Curated by author and historian John William Templeton, the trail captures the history of African Americans such as William Leidesdorff, who was vice-consul of the San Francisco port, and the locations they frequented, including African American schools and the San Francisco African-American chamber, among others.
“When you start unpeeling the history of African Americans in California, every time you turn over a rock, it leads to a gold mine,” Templeton says.
