She was the first black student to make the honor roll at her high school
Though her parents divorced when she was a teenage girl, she recalled that it did not change the roadmap her parents had laid out for her. They were bent on ensuring she completed her education despite all odds. Aside from the burden of divorce hanging on her head, she was schooling at a time when girls couldn’t complete high school.
This strengthened her determination to avoid disappointing her parents. That devotion paid off when Mamie became the first black student to make the honor roll at her high school. She also added her name to the history pages of Argo Community High School when she became the fourth African American to complete her studies in a predominantly white institution.
