Haiti nominated prime minister, Jean-Henry Ceant is set to replace former head of government, Guy Lafontant, who had resigned following violent protests against the government’s increase of petroleum prices.
Lafontant’s resignation came ahead of a motion of censure against him, and his cabinet, over the July 6-8 riots that emerged after the government planned to raise the fuel prices as part of Haiti’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund At least seven people died in the riots.
Ceant was nominated on August 6 by President Jovenel Moise after deliberation with the two branches of Parliament.
