Removal of Presidential Age Limit in Uganda
A week before Christmas, the Ugandan parliament was a no-go zone as parliamentarians debated a proposal to remove the presidential age limit from the constitution. Ugly scenes were witnessed inside the Ugandan parliament for two consecutive days as opposition members attempted to prevent their colleagues on the ruling side from passing the motion.
Unfortunately, their efforts were fruitless since the motion was later passed overwhelmingly, giving President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda for 31 years, a chance to run for another term of office. The controversial presidential age limit prevented candidates above the age of 75 from running for the top office. And although the new law has re-introduced the presidential term limit, it gives President Museveni, 73, to serve for two more terms.
