Bryshere Y. Gray, aka Hakeem Lyon of ‘Empire,’ has been charged with assault and battery in Chesapeake. The 31-year-old was not arrested by Chesapeake police, who claimed that a private citizen took the charge out.
According to court documents obtained by Wavy, one of Gray’s acquaintances, Dustin Wilkins (also known as Chosen Wilkins), was the victim. He claimed Gray charged him from behind a car during an altercation, which occurred one afternoon at Homewood Suites.

Information from the misdemeanor arrest warrant stated, “As I was explaining to him that he can’t just leave without paying adding you have enough problems…I am trying to save your life. He then charged towards me from around the car. Charged into me with his shoulder…and fighting me as I was recording the incident over the phone…a blunt blow into me and punching me.”
Chosen stressed that Gray is not an evil person while saying to Wavy that Gray has a mental health condition.
“Something took place in a mental health aspect. I can not disclose what happened, I can not disclose the details of that,” Chosen remarked. “All I can tell you is Bryshere is a friend, he’s like my brother. He is just someone who is dealing with some very interesting mental health issues.”
According to Chosen, he also played a major part in securing Gray a bond. “Bryshere doesn’t need to be in jail. He wouldn’t survive in jail. He needs mental help,” Chosen said.
A representative for Gray contacted Wavy and confirmed that he lives in Virginia and has family there. She also revealed that he has been collaborating with Chosen on a TV series titled ‘The Star Boy.’
Most of the filming took place in Virginia Beach, Atlanta, and Washington, DC. Gray and Chosen are two of the men whose lives are followed in the reality program series. According to the spokesperson, Gray’s mental health issues forced the show’s production to halt.
There will be an arraignment on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, NBC reports that Gray was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2020 on charges of assaulting his wife. Officers in the Phoenix suburb of Goodyear arrested him about nine hours after his wife called 911, according to a statement from the police. He was taken into custody on accusations of assault and disorderly behavior, according to jail records.
Gray was born in Philadelphia and goes by the rap name “Yazz the Greatest.”
