Named after the freed slaves that helped build the port town, Libreville is a wealthy capital and the capital of Gabon since it gained independence in 1960.

The city ranks 33^rd in the 2020 Mercer Cost of Living, making it the 3^rd most expensive city in Africa. Last year it ranked 24^th globally and was also the 3^rd in Africa.
