Grammy-nominated rapper GloRilla went back to her former high school on Wednesday and surprised students and staff with a $25,000 donation that would be used to upgrade their resources.
Per FOX 13, GloRilla, whose real name is Gloria Hallelujah Woods, also entertained the students and staff at Melrose High School in Memphis as she performed her hit song Yeah Glo!
“I always wished somebody could do that when I was younger,” the 25-year-old Memphis rapper said. “So the fact that I have the ability to do it now, it warms my heart.”
To show gratitude for her donation, Melrose High Principal Kristopher Davis said they would rename their school library Gloria H. Woods Media Center. “We want to upgrade our system so students can be more interactive, so they can research and take their learning to the next level,” Principal Davis said.
GloRilla has had a very stellar year. Besides releasing her Glorious album and earning two Grammy nods, she was also crowned 2024’s Hottest Female Rapper by Billboard. The Associated Press also named her as one of the Breakout Entertainers of 2024, with Time magazine naming her TGIF track as the Best Song of the Year.
“Don’t ever get too comfortable,” she told The Associated Press. “Take advantage of everything that comes your way. If you drive and apply yourself, it’s going to happen.”
She also praised her mother for training her the right way. “My momma always told me to be humble and grateful,” she said. “I come from nothing almost. My mom is well mannered. My mom taught us right, like, internally, have a great spirit. My personality and spirit come from my momma.”
GloRilla got signed to rapper Yo Gotti’s record label, “CMG”, following the success of her hit song F.N.F (Let’s Go). She has since gone on to become one of the hottest female rappers.
