How this NFL player just became the second-largest shareholder in the bank he opened his first account

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is making a mark on and off the field. On the field, he has made his mark as one of the most valuable NFL players but off the field, his interest is in the banking space.

He is the second largest shareholder in American State Bank which is based in Tyler, Texas. Mahomes’ relationship with the bank dates back to when he first opened his account when he was only 16 years old. Since then, the bank has been part of his life, right from his collegiate days at Texas Tech University and his professional career in Kansas City.

“I opened my first account with American State Bank when I was just 16 years old,” said Mahomes in a press release, according to bizjournal. “From my time at Texas Tech and throughout my career in Kansas City, ASB has been a constant in my life and I’m proud to join the ownership group during its transformation into a major player in the Lubbock market, Texas and the new digital economy.”

The bank currently hopes to expand in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Lubbock, Amarillo, and Plainview markets. With the investment made by Mahomes, the bank expects to expand its base and build its digital footprint.

“As a lifelong Texan, to have the opportunity to team up with someone as inspirational as Patrick as we transform ASB from a local bank in our great state to a global bank of the future is a dream come true,” said ASB’s Chairman Brandon Steele in a statement.

This is not the first time Mahomes has been directly involved in businesses around Kansas. He was instrumental in lobbying Texas-based Whataburger to come to the Kansas City market. He is also an investor in KMO Burger LLC, a franchisee that plans to open 30 Whataburger locations in the Kansas City area.

Mahomes is an investor in the Kansas City Royals and Sporting Kansas City, which is owned by his wife, Brittany. What is more, the NFL player has an interest in Whoop and Hyperice.

In addition to his investment portfolio, he has endorsement deals with brands like Adidas, State Farm Insurance and CommunityAmerica Credit Union. A sponsorship deal with Hy-Vee Inc. includes marketing of Mahomes Magic Crunch cereal.

Mahomes surpassed Seattle’s Russell Wilson to become the youngest (age 25) quarterback in NFL history to start in two Super Bowls. At age 24, he became the third-youngest player and youngest quarterback in NFL history to be named Super Bowl MVP as well as the youngest player to ever win a league MVP and a Super Bowl title.
